Dragon Egg Gender Reveal!

My newly wed brother and his amazing wife are expecting their first baby and I was so excited when they said I could make them a gender reveal cake! If you’ve been following the progress of my cakes, you’ll remember that their wedding cake featured a towering dragon towering over their D&D figurines. It seemed only fitting that their gender reveal be dragon themed.

My bro had the idea to have chocolate dragon eggs that needed to be cracked open to find the one that had blue or pink cookie letters that spelled out the baby’s name. I loved it and an idea of creating a dragon nesting area started to take shape! I’ve worked with chocolate some but never to this extent and again I learned a lot! I mainly learned that I need to practice more, much more, especially with getting the temper right! And buy more than one mold! (It definitely took longer than I planned to get the chocolate eggs done.)

The cake is an applesauce spice cake, old family recipe that’s been passed down from my great grandma. (This also happens to be my absolute favorite cake!) I always frost this cake with maple buttercream which I kept the natural light tan color because it was meant to look like the ground. The eggs are nestled in a caramel nest. I loved the idea of have a pink and a blue baby dragon that had just hatched and opted to use a mold vs. sculpting one. I dusted them with pearl dust for the color. The mother to be loves fondant and I knew she’d like munching on it later. The lava rocks are bite-size brownies that I picked up at the local grocery store.

This certainly isn’t your typical gender reveal cake which makes me love it even more! We had a lot of fun breaking the eggs. Everyone who was local and available gathered at my house and everyone else joined on Facetime for the big reveal. The second egg cracked open revealed blue snickerdoodle letters spelling Charles Victor! It was a great night and so much fun! One of my brothers ate the “T” before we thought about taking a picture of the name with the baby blue dragon. I think he improvised a new “T” nicely!
