Miss Aurelia wants a unicorn!

My three youngest nieces all have birthday’s pretty close to each other and so we often have joint parties. Often the girls ask for the same types of cakes as well and this year was no different. My niece Aurelia turned 6 this year and like her big sister before her, she wanted a unicorn strawberry cake. Her sister’s cake from 2 years prior was the popular unicorn head (also strawberry) and it was one of the first “bigger” cakes I had made. It had a lot of problems but they loved it and I learned a lot.

For Aurelia, I wanted to do something unique so she wasn’t just getting her sister’s cake (did I mention they are pretty competitive!) I also like to use these cakes to practice skills I don’t do often. Enter isomalt! This one was my first venture into isomalt. I definitely learned a lot but I don’t think they turned out very well. Of course, all of the kids eating them loved em! I did breakdown in the end and melted some jolly ranchers so that I knew I had some suckers I knew would taste good!

For Aurelia’s cake I used a modified box cake, two layers were strawberry and one lemon. I followed the box cake tips I learned from the SugarGeekShow tutorials and the cakes turned out great. I have learned so much from the SugarGeekShow tutorials and love her recipes! For the filling, I made a fresh strawberry jam. The cake tasted like a strawberry lemonade!

The cake was covered in a cream cheese buttercream. The top was meant to be a naked cake with a thicker layer towards the bottom. I painted the ridge with a gold edible glitter. I sculpted the unicorn using fondant and I make fondant letter and flowers. The isomalt suckers stand like trees and there are some candy melt balls to finish out the whimsical feel. Aurelia loves colors and has a bright and vibrant personality and so although I got the general idea for this design from @kasadelika, I altered it to match her style!
